Our new Vice President, Hans Gust has organized a very special and
knowledgeable guest speaker for this evening, Joyce Murray, M.P,. For Vancouver Quadra. Joyce Murray was first elected as Vancouver Quadra’s voice in Parliament in a 2008 by-election. She was re-elected later in the 2008 general election.
In Ottawa, Joyce is a fierce advocate for various issues: environment and fighting climate change, creating jobs and a strong economy through innovation, human rights and women’s rights, and preventative health. In October 2009, she was appointed as Liberal Critic for Amateur Sport and the Vancouver Olympics, indeed a noteworthy portfolio as Vancouver, British Columbia and Canada hosted the world during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As Critic for Amateur Sport, she is keen to develop policy that will further engage Canadians in amateur sport and recreation and healthy living.
Joyce Murray’s path to provincial federal politics is indeed unique. As her twitter profile reads, “tree planter MP goes to Ottawa”. She co-founded an international reforestation company that will soon plant its billionth tree. Joyce has proven that that environment and business do not have to be competing interests, but can instead complement each other.
Joyce Murray has three grown children and proudly lives in Vancouver Quadra with her husband Dirk.
